Introduction, History, and Epidemiology In the United States over 5 million people, 13% of individuals over 70, are estimated to be affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, now recognized to be the 6th leading cause of death in the overall population. (1,2) Epidemiological studies in the U.S. and other countries indicate that among those over 85, as many as 29-47% meet criteria for probable AD. (3,4) Worldwide, a recent report estimated that over 35 million people are living with dementia with an annual global cost of over $600 billion. (5) In West Virginia, it is estimated that approximately 48,000 people have AD, with an economic impact in excess of $7 billion in this state alone.5 Such statistics portend a truly staggering burden of suffering and expense for patients, caregivers and taxpayers in our aging society.
